1971 Charger R/T and SuperBee Facts and Features

by Sue George

Chrysler issued several changes to be made to the Charger and SuperBee during the model year. On July 28, 1970, front and rear spoilers were made available. The cast aluminum 15 inch Road wheel (W23) was canceled. Five-spoke Road wheels were not available with G70X14 tires (T93).

On August 26, 1970, the 340 4bbl engine was made available on the SuperBee, effective in mid-October. Transmission and rear axle availability were the same as the 383 and all other 383 4bbl options were available.

It was announced on November 20, 1970-to be effective on December 1, 1970-the manual 6-way adjustable seat and the colored bumper package (with GF7 paint) were canceled.

The collapsible spare tire/wheel was released on January 4, 1971. In early May, 1971, dealers were told that color-keyed seat belts were discontinued during the last 30 days of the 1971 production. Black seat belts were installed instead.

Some new features for the 1971 models included tamper-resistant odometers, steering column lock inhibitor for console-mounted shifters, a cassette tape player/recorder, and the new cool optional headlight washers. These were two motorized brushes and a sprayer that washed and scrubbed the headlights off! It was option code J24 and cost a mere $29.30.

This was also the year that compression ratios were significantly decreased, so what used to be the high performance engines could now run on the increasingly poor pump gas. The 383 4bbl went from a compression ratio of 9.5:1 to only 8.7:1.
